About
Selection of non-profits for Black History Month that provide support and services to Black Trans and Gender Non-Conforming people.
Within the Black community, Trans and Gender Non-Conforming individuals face devastating levels of discrimination and violence that stem from transphobia and bigotry compounded by structural racism. Every year, the number of trans individuals murdered is dubbed the "Deadliest year on record for transgender people". In 2021 there were 375 transgender people murdered. This number is realistically much higher due to under reporting of crimes.
The trans community of color was also exponentially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States:
• 26% of transgender people of color have become unemployed
• 67% transgender people of color are no longer able to pay their bills
• 58% of transgender people of color have had their work hours reduced
• 27% of transgender people of color have had their pay cut
• 31% of transgender people of color have had to take unpaid leave
• 30% of transgender people of color have been forced to switch to part-time working hours
